As we prepare Cherry Hill Montessori for another school year, I am reminded of how special the first day of school is for our children, and for those of us who get to share in this important day. My children always wake up excited and happy, with a tinge of trepidation about the unknown. My older children also feel a little regret or sadness that the summer is over. But, the first day of school means a lot of wonderful things: more opportunity for our children to learn and experience new adventures; greater chances for them to meet new friends and develop more mature social skills; and, of course, the ability to gain independence and confidence on their own.

Last week I drove my third child, Kerri, to college. We were both sad. Yet, I realized that all the years she had spent in school, and in sports and activities, and all the years she had spent facing new challenges, prepared her to go out on her own. Her first day of college class is today and I am sure she awakened with trepidation and excitement and, of course, some regret. This is a special day for her, her first day of school. I am excited for her.

Parents, enjoy these moments you have with your young children! Wake up on September 5th and share your child’s excitement about the day. The first day of school only comes once a year, and the years go by so quickly! Someday your child, too, will be where Kerri is. And you will remember then how excited you both were when you left her for her first day at Cherry Hill Montessori. I do. It seems like it was yesterday.
