We’re fresh off the busses from our Johnson’s Corner Farm field trip and wanted to tell you all what a great success it was.
We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day. It started off cool, but the clouds drifted off while we were in the cornfield, and the sun came out just in time for our students to enjoy feeding the goats and chickens.
Our trip was a little different this year. We postponed our trip from the last week in October to the first week in November due to the threat of inclement weather, but with that, we were not able to pick pumpkins. Instead, we took a hayride to the cornfields and sweet potato patch where we got to pick corn for popping and unearth and dig up our very own sweet potatoes. (How big were some of those sweet potatoes!?) This was such a great experience. Oftentimes we are so removed from where our food comes from, or how it is grown and harvested, that this was a terrific reminder.
After our picnic lunch, our day ended by burning off the rest of our energy on the Johnson’s Farm playground. I think it’s safe to say that both the children and family members who attended had a really special time.
At the end of the day, after we arrived back at school, you should have found in your child’s cubby an information sheet on the crops that were picked and how to prepare your corn for popping. If you need the instructions on how to prepare your corn, you can click here. (After the web page opens, select the letter P and scroll down to popcorn.)
